End of Life For Windows XP

As of April 8, 2014, support and updates for Windows XP are no longer available.  If you are still using windows XP you most likely got an ominous warning from windows update that told you to upgrade to a new operating system.

But what does this really mean to people continuing to use Windows XP?  Well there are two answers to this...

The First answer... it doesn't mean much.  You will still be able to use your computer just as you always have.  You can still browse the web and use all of the software you have come to know and love.  There is no need to run out right away and purchase a new computer or upgrade your operating system on your existing hardware.

The Second answer...  You are no longer going to receive operating system or Internet Explorer 8 updates so new exploits found in both software packages will no longer be fixed and thus will be less secure.  Also, eventually as websites use updated plugins and code Internet Explorer 8 will work with less and less websites.  For better security and compatibility users may want to choose another browser.  There are dozens of web browsers out there but the 2 best known free browsers are Mozilla Firefox - http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/ and Google Chrome - https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95346?hl=en

Microsoft has also decided to no longer make Microsoft Security Essentials Antivirus software available to XP users as well.  Users who already have Security Essentials will be able to continue using it but no new downloads are available.  Users looking for a good free antivirus software can use Avast - http://www.avast.com/index or AVG - http://www.avg.com/ww-en/free-antivirus-download

If you are looking to upgrade either your hardware or just your operating system you have several options.  Windows 7 is very much like Windows XP.  Windows 8 is very good also and can be modified / customized to look more like XP.  Either of these operating systems are a good option.
